“Salvation was completely different to how I imagined it would be.”
Eugene Higgins explains the way of salvation from the last verse of John’s Gospel chapter 3, which reads: “He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him” (Jn 3.36). He develops his presentation of the gospel around 4 contrasts in this verse:
- “Whom”, not “How”
- “Him”, not “you”
- “Having”, not “hoping”
- “Heaven”, not “hell”
Mr Higgins relates how he personally tried desperately to work up a feeling that he really, really, really believed…in the hope that he would thereby know for sure that his sins were forgiven – but to no avail. When he actually did become saved, he says “salvation was completely different to how I imagined it would be”.
