“I wanted to be saved more than anything else in the world” (10 min)

Alexander H. Joyce (1926-2006) grew up in a preacher’s home. His father was the evangelist Albert Joyce (1897-1982). As a boy, young Alec attended many many gospel meetings, and developed a great longing to be saved. After a lengthy period of soul trouble, Alec’s mother was used of the Lord to direct her 13 year old son to read and be blessed through the words of John 5:24, the same year that World War 2 started in 1939. His own parents influenced him in two different directions. He says he could easily have ended up an alcoholic, but by the grace of God he was spared that tragedy and came to know the Lord Jesus through the preaching of the gospel, but only after discovering - at his lowest point - that he was "helpless but not hopeless". The author of "O Love That Wilt Not Let Me Go", George Matheson (1842–1906), was a Scottish minister, blind from the age of 17. Of this hymn he said, "I am quite sure that the whole work was completed in five minutes, and equally sure that it never received at my hands any retouching or correction. I have no natural gift of rhythm. All the other verses I have ever written are manufactured articles; this came like a dayspring from on high." Matheson, age 40, wrote the hymn the day his sister was married. It was likely that he was reflecting on the heartbreak of years before, when his fiancée gave him up due to his going blind. "O Love That Wilt Not Let me Go" went on to become one of the most beloved Christian hymns of all time. Here it is, joyfully sung by young people from Roseisle Gospel Hall in Manitoba, Canada.
