Hugh Scott – Door Keeping in the House of God (50 min)

Hugh Scott (1911-1986), from Whitburn in Scotland, was a much-used teacher of the Word of God. In the non-combatant Corps during WW2, Mr Scott was then for many years the manager of a grocery store. It is said that his ministry was very much like the layout of his shop; everything was in order and neatly packaged. A master of his subject, he spoke with great authority and fervour, pouring forth material at a rate difficult to keep up with, but full of help and of food for thought. Here he speaks on the revival in the days of Nehemiah. Of the 5 groups listed – priests, Levites, singers, porters and the Nethinim – Mr Scott particularly highlights the porters. He presses the need for “door-keeping in the house of God”. This is a spirit that should mark every individual believer: “set for the defense of divine things”. We are to be doorkeepers of the ark (the Son of God), of the gates of house (God’s assembly), of the treasuries (the worship of God), and of the ward of purification (the people of God). This was a style of ministry common in a former era. It took years and years of study and development to be able to give it, and it needs reviving again today.
