John Toisma was born into a religious home in the Netherlands in 1947. Emigrating as a young lad to British Columbia, Canada, John continued to be religiously minded, but was not saved. His mother died very tragically when John was 15. Then a preacher from a local Gospel Hall by the name of Lou Swaan contacted John and got him out to a gospel meeting.
